In 2012, it quietly reversed its decision and allowed users to sign up with an email address, but it made that option available in tiny font on its registration page. When Spotify launched in the US in 2011, it required users to sign up with Facebook. As it turns out, you can’t unlink your Facebook from Spotify! If you created a Spotify account with Facebook (likely), it is *forever* tied to your Facebook account. In a statement, Spotify said it “has not experienced a security breach.” But removing your Facebook account as a log-in method would be a good precaution, anyway. So, today, I tried to unlink my Facebook account from my Spotify account.īecause security! Essentially, attackers stole “access tokens” that allow full access to Facebook accounts, as well as access to accounts that use Facebook as a log-in (called “Facebook single sign-on”). Spotify was super great, resolved (and refunded!) back everything, but eliminating this feature would’ve saved me (and them) time and money.A recent Facebook security breach put thousands of sites that use Facebook Login at risk of hacking. Plus Netflix logged me out everywhere, so it was pretty clear there was an issue (Spotify doesn’t do this either). Had the same issue with Netflix, but I had to immediately reset the password because there’s no other option - This prevented them from having access there for more than a day.
If I hadn’t gotten a new phone, this could’ve gone on forever without my knowing. They then had access for multiple months, changing the subscription type, the email and password on file until I finally found out when I had to log in on a new phone.
I was able to get into my account, but then had no idea that it was hacked - Thinking I just forgot another password. However, my account was recently hacked and I used this option after they had reset my password. Especially since I’m always forgetting them to random subscription services. Originally I loved this option through Spotify, where you’re able to simply verify through your email to login rather than use your password.
